Phantom Quartz Crystal Group – SNCO 067

Phantom quartz crystal group

Measurements:  44 x 34 x 20 mm

Description:  A group of clear quartz crystals, most of them with blackish phantoms, caused when the initial clear quartz crystals were covered by a layer of hematite coloured specks which, in turn, was covered with a layer of clear quartz during secondary quartz growth. The second biggest crystal has a light outer layer of iron oxide on its termination. A few very small patches of the brownish phantom are exposed on the specimen.

The biggest crystal has a minute nick to its termination point (hardly visible to the naked eye) and a nick at its termination base, while the second biggest crystal has a narrow nick that runs from its tip along the termination ridge for 4 mm (image top right) and a prominent pressure mark to its back, with a lengthwise flaw near its side. There is a flaw towards the middle of the centre crystal. Some damage to the edges of the specimen.

The specimen displays well in an upright position on a flat surface.
