Prehnite and Quartz Pocket – NBB 066

Prehnite balls and quartz crystals in pocket - Brandberg, Namibia


 Measurements:  71 x 39 x 33 mm

Description:  A small pocket of prehnite and quartz crystals in basalt. The two main prehnite balls (the larger 16 mm long) appear to be undamaged. 
Two sides of the basalt has been trimmed. There are some minute clusters on the quartz crystals that appear to be malachite.

Chemical Composition:  Ca2Al2Si3O10(OH)2   (prehnite)  
                                    SiO2  (quartz)
                                    Cu2+(CO3)(OH)2  (malachite)

Hardness on Mohs Scale:  (prehnite)  6-6.5
                                      (quartz)  7
                                      (malachite)  3.5-4
